Complete map of Van Diemens Land drawn by the Surveyor General, G.W. Evans.
First discovered by the Dutch navigator, Tasman in 1642, this coast appeared on maps of the region for more than 150 years nominally connected to the mainland until Bass and Flinders mapped Bass Strait in 1798, showing it to be an island.
